Migration

Migration

The empty nest
is in clear view.
The children gone,
the parents, too.
Flown to a
warmer clime.
I'd like to
follow right behind.

If the Sun Could Sing

If the Sun Could Sing

And the speck of my heart, in my shed of flesh and bone,
began to sing out, the way the sun would sing if the sun could sing,...Mary Oliver

If the sun could sing
we would hear her rise,
trumpeting the colors in the sky.

Move to her rhythm
throughout the day.
Sing along, swing and sway.

Note the instant that she sets
and the silence that tags along.
Await her return with a new song.

Weather-Beaten

Weather-Beaten

Dried by the sun.
Cracks converge.
Warped by wetness.
Begins to bow.
Rattled by the wind.
Won't fall down.
Beaten, but still holds up.

The Last Word

The Last Word

I play with
words everyday.
Let them tell me
what to say.
If I dare
to disobey,
I see their
temper on display.
The words wind
up in disarray.
Best to let them
have their way.

Upside Down

Upside Down

Upside down,
not just turned around
but inverted.
Head down,
feet off the ground.
Topsy-turvy
Uncertain if I can ever
right myself again.

Hats Off to the Doctor

Hats Off to the Doctor

Walking through the library stacks,
I found a cat that wore a hat,
a fish or two of red and blue,
an elephant that heard a Who.
The Grinch that stole the holiday?
I still encounter him today.
The places that you said I'd go?
I've been to more than you would know.
It took nearly a lifetime,
but I've become quite fond of rhyme.

Thanks to Janice Sheridan for this week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt-Children's Books. What is your favorite children's book or series?

Cold

Cold

chaps lips.
numbs fingers.
lingers after
it's left outside.

reddens skin.
burns lungs.
refuses warmth,
even from the sun.

Floating

Floating

Buoyant
Still yet moving
Relaxed, no fear of sinking
Mind at ease, not thinking
Relinquish the post of captain
Let changes in direction happen
under the command of the waves.
