The Leaves Begin to Fill the Trees Again

The Leaves Begin to Fill the Trees Again

The leaves begin to
fill the trees again.
The branches hang
differently, as if
they are showing
off new clothes.
The green stands out
against the clouds.
The rustle returns
when the wind blows.
I know all these things
will happen each spring.
Yet, as they do, I
can't help but feel
the excitement anew.

The Last Day of Vacation

The Last Day of Vacation

I take one more
stroll by the shore.
Breathe in sea air.
Watch the sun dance
on the water.
Let my eyes scan
the horizon.
Listen to waves
as they roll in.
The time has come
for me to turn
and walk away.
At that moment,
I am jealous
of those who are
able to stay.

"Be Home Before the Streetlights Come On"

"Be Home Before the Streetlights Come On"

I'd head out to play
after dinner with
that mandate running
through my mind.
I'd join in the game
of the night--hide
and seek or tag,
catch or kickball.
My friends and I
could see time slip
away as the sun
crept down and
the natural light
grew dimmer.
As all around us
turned gray, we
would stop play
then begin to
make our way
home before the
streetlights came on.

The prompt for Day 20 of the PAD Challenge--Dark. It's hard to believe we are in the homestretch of the challenge.

Reasons I Love Nature

Reasons I Love Nature

The sun breaking the horizon.
The colors all around.
The birds flying in formation.
The symphony of sounds.
The trees are bare in winter,
but in spring, blooms abound.
The many sights I see
that leave me spellbound.

Earth Day Present

Earth Day Present

What better way
to spend Earth Day
than taking pictures
in a park?
The ducks and geese
were up to
their usual antics
when I saw
a blue heron
flying over the lake.
It landed on
a stone ledge
and gazed at
the water, then
paced on the grass.
Suddenly, it took off
and flew in
the direction from
which it came.
I was told that
herons frequented
the park, but this
was the first one
I had seen.
Happy Earth Day to me!

After the Concert

After the Concert

The music comes with me.
The voices still sing.
The rhythms run through me.
The words fill my mind.
Time passes by before I
can sleep after the concert.

The prompt for Day 6 of the PAD Challenge was a fill-in-the-blank--after _______.  I invite you to go to one of the challenge pages and browse. I think you will enjoy the variety of work that is inspired by a single prompt.

When I Walk in the Park

When I Walk in the Park

When I walk in the park,
I never know what I'll see.
A heron rousted from
under a dock.
A family of geese
out for a walk.
Ducks diving for lunch
or preening on rocks.
When I walk in the park,
Mother Nature ensures that
some surprises pop up.

Morning Routine

April is National Poetry Month and that means Robert Lee Brewer's Poem-A-Day Challenge is taking place on the Poetic Asides blog. I wrote the following poem for the Day 1 prompt--morning:

Morning Routine

 Are you an early bird?
Awake to greet the sun?
Out the door for a walk or run
while peace outweighs commotion?
A fan of the natural songs
that fill the air until
the noise pollution starts?
Moving at your own pace
before you get swept up
in the motion all around you?
