Halloween

Halloween

One night each year,
we walk among ghosts
and goblins, vampires
and witches.
We hear the
werewolves howl.
We face the monsters
and tame them with
a little sweetness.

What are you doing for Halloween? Is it a favorite holiday or not?

Noises in the Night

Noises in the Night

Noises in the night
are amplified.
Background sounds
have been put to bed.
What made that thud?
Was it inside or out?
Grab the phone and
look around.
A motor starts.
The car pulls away.
Calm is restored
and sleep follows.

Do you hear things go bump in the night? Are you more aware of these sounds as Halloween approaches?

Collateral Damage

Collateral Damage

The milkweed beetle
doesn't damage its host.
It eats the seeds,
cuts down the number
of new plants,
diminishes the
food supply of
the monarchs.
The destruction
comes in the loss
of what could have been.

Do you observe nature then write about what you see?

Sadness

Sadness

The body sags
with sadness.
Shoulders
Chin
Mouth
We appear
smaller in stature,
physically lessened.
The eyes look out
into the distance,
searching for that
which is no longer near.
Vacant, emptied
of all that is lost.

This was inspired by the drooping petals of this flower. What do you think of when you look at this picture?

Whispers

Whispers

I still hear you
offer words of
encouragement
or inspiration,
congratulations
or consolation
and love, always
love.
I hear you
whenever I need to,
but now you whisper
in my mind
instead of my ear.

What memories or feelings does the word whisper evoke?

How the Wind Blows

How the Wind Blows

The wind may storm.
Feel cold as ice.
Move objects around.
Tear towns down.

The wind may be gentle.
Caress all it meets.
Provide relief from the heat.
Blow in peace.

How will the wind blow today?

Interweave

Interweave

Entwine the strands.
Move back and forth.
Crisscross, over
and under. Don't
stop, avoid a knot.
Shapes form but
are easily torn.
Weave the fragility
into beauty.

What will you weave today? How do you string things together?

Detached

Detached

The single feather
of a blue jay
lies in the grass.
It appears whole
as though it was
let go by the bird
not torn from it.
Did the jay note
its absence?
Miss it the first
time he flew
without it?
Accept the loss
as part of the
natural order
and send it off
with the dip
of a wing?

Have you found a bird's feather in your yard? Did you wonder how the bird lost it?

Stuck

Stuck

Rusty, like
the Tin Man
after a rain.
Can't reach
the oil can.
Can't move
closer.
Can't call
for help.
Hope someone
happens by
before the
metal starts
to crumble.

What in your life has gotten rusty?
