Spirit

Spirit

A presence,
familiar yet strange.
With us, but no longer here.
Untouchable, but able to
touch us just the same.

I'll be taking a break for the holidays. The next post will be January 5.

Not So Clever

Not So Clever

Sometimes, I try
to be too clever
with my writing.
Start a rhyme scheme
that loses steam.
Take alliteration to
territories terribly trite.
Slip in a simile
as smooth as silk.
Or, at the end of
the day, resort
to cliches.

Reflections in Water

Reflections in Water

They appear fluid,
unbound by reality.
Wrinkled in spots
like fingertips too
long submerged.

They rock with the
rhythm of the waves
and lull me into
unlimited reflections.

Blankets

Blankets

The fall winds throw the leaves together.
They create a blanket of warm colors for cool days.

Then, the leaves turn brown, crunch underfoot.
They await soft flakes and a covering of their own.

A Place of Quiet

A Place of Quiet

I need a place of quiet
so I can hear my soul speak.
Seek counsel from myself.
Listen without distraction
to what lies within,
but not to the lies within.
Sift through the thoughts
until the truth surfaces,
floats up from the depths
where I have tried to drown it.

A Morning Walk

A Morning Walk

The sun presents
a colorful hello.

The birds sing
their greeting.

The trees wave and
 change every day.
.
The moon shows its
face then fades away.

I breathe in all
that lies before me.

Cloud Cover

Cloud Cover

The cloud cover
is vast today.
Gray billows everywhere,
not a speck of blue.
The sun does not
play hide and seek.
It stays undercover.
The first blast of cold
air carries the fear
that the brightness
will never return.
I shudder to shake
off that feeling and
hold on to my belief
in the light.

Left Hanging

Left Hanging

So many questions
in the air.
Can't find the answers
anywhere.
Not in the sun or the stars
or the moon.
Not today or tomorrow or
anytime soon.

Happy Thanksgiving

Writing poetry and taking photographs has taught me to take the time to look around each day. I have seen many beautiful things that way, including some things in my own backyard.

Here's looking at you!

The Feel of Paper

The Feel of Paper

I want the feel of
paper as I turn the page.
Lift the corner, slide
my fingers across the
words and flip to
the other side.

Crack the spine
of the new and
smell the ink.
Coddle those whose
binding life has broken
and bear witness to their stains.

There is enough
plastic in my day.
I want the feel of
paper as I turn the page.

We Never Know

We Never Know

The flower broke.
For days, it endured
the hot sun,
the whipping wind,
the beating rain.

Today, the flower broke.
The bloom bowed and
could no longer rise.

Who knows what made
 the difference from
 one day to the next?
We never know.

The Force of the Wind

The Force of the Wind

The flag hangs
limply on the pole.
It gets a lift
from the light breeze
but quickly sags
back down.
The velocity is
not strong enough
to make the cloth
extend, flap and snap.

There have been
other times like this.
The flag has learned
to rise each day and
remain visible until
it catches the full
force of the wind
once again.
