Are we ready

to set sail?

Will we catch the

wind just right?

Will the water be

smooth or rough?

Can we weather the

storms that move in?

How will the voyage go?

Doesn't that depend on

who's pulling the strings?

Once Upon a Sailboat

Once Upon a Sailboat

I was once

upon a sailboat

when the weather

turned so fast

I had to face the fear

that this sail

might be my last.

The river changed

from glass to swells,

the sky from blue to gray.

The steady breeze

became great gusts.

The sun simply

went away.

We came about

and headed back,

our progress

made in spurts.

Forward, capsize,

right the boat--

we reached the dock,

relieved, unhurt.

I have always

loved the water

and I always will,

but I never forget

a storm may form

when all seems

bright and still.

I wrote this poem for Robert Lee Brewer's 2015 November PAD Chapbook Challenge. The prompt was to take the phrase, Once Upon a (blank), replace the blank and use the completed phrase as the title of the poem. What is your "Once Upon a (blank)" poem?

Dream Voyage

Dream Voyage

I used to dream

of sailing in

the ships of old.

Tall and tilting

in the wind,

throwing a spray, 

salty and cold.

I would stand on

the deck at night

and use the stars

to chart the course.

Day after day, we

would move as one.

Fearless and

adventuresome.

The ship, the sea

and me.
