New Life

New Life

In the dead of winter,

the cold has a bite.

The clouds are gray.

The trees are bare.

The animals take flight.

As my spirits sink,

I come upon a pod

still full of seeds.

It holds on

despite the elements.

Mother Nature's reminder

that there is new life.

Winter Drops In Early

Winter Drops In Early

Winter drops in early,
only stays a couple of days.

I put on my heaviest jacket
and a pair of boots.
.
My foot slips ever so slightly
when I step outside.

I have to brush snow off
the car before I start to drive.
.
The car slides a little bit
when I make a turn.

Winter drops in early
to remind us how it works.

Frozen in Winter

Frozen in Winter

We are frozen in winter.
Time sprang ahead
but the weather didn't.
What will fall from
the sky is anyone's guess.
The wind chills and
the temperature drops.
Will you join me in asking,
"Please, make it stop?"

Frozen

Frozen

The leaf feels free
detached from the tree.
Catches a ride
on  the wind.
Skids along the streets
then lands in a lake,
floats with the ducks
and the geese.
When the air turns cold,
the birds escape.
The leaf freezes in place,
held captive until the thaw.

Snow

Snow

Snow falls silently.
Doesn't tap on the roof
or let us hear the rhythm
of how hard it comes down.
Snow makes us walk
to the window and watch.
Wants us to see it
fresh and bright,
glistening in the light
so we will remember its
beauty as we clear it away.

Migration

Migration

The empty nest
is in clear view.
The children gone,
the parents, too.
Flown to a
warmer clime.
I'd like to
follow right behind.

Cold

Cold

chaps lips.
numbs fingers.
lingers after
it's left outside.

reddens skin.
burns lungs.
refuses warmth,
even from the sun.

Winter Came Overnight

Winter Came Overnight

Winter came overnight.
I tried to turn it away.
Hold on to the sunshine
and warmth of the day.
The wind picked up.
The clouds moved in.
Forty degrees of
separation between
what the temperature
became and what
 it had been.
In the morning
indisputable proof,
a dusting of snow
 up on the roof.

Did the weather in your area suddenly turn cold? Have you had your first snow?

Tuesday Photo-Cold

Is there something that makes you feel cold just by looking at it? Lara Schiffbauer challenged us to present a visual representative of cold in this week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt.

Well, I grew up in Buffalo, N.Y. so when I hear the word cold, I think of winter. Now, of course, winter in Buffalo is usually associated with snow, but there is another image that makes me think of the cold of winter. Whenever I see bare trees against dark clouds, I can't help but shiver. Maybe it is because I expect snow to fall from those clouds or I remember the chill wind off of Lake Erie. Anyway, here is a photo that makes me feel cold:

It's not too late to join in the fun! Take a picture that represents cold to you and post a link to it in the comments on the blog post at Wordsmith Studio.
