Fall Colors

Fall Colors

Fall colors fall as

reflections on the lake.

They appear and disappear

from day-to-day.

Fall colors fall as

the leaves let go.

Blanket the ground

then the wind comes along.

Fall colors fall until

they all are gone.

Storm Damage

Storm Damage

They would have fallen anyway.

But, I might have had them

a few more days.

Instead, the wind and rain came through.

Cut short our time together.

There was nothing I could do.

Mourning Dove

Mourning Dove

Are you watching over me?

Do you have a message

from someone I can't see?

When I wish for comfort,

I know you'll bring it along.

It begins as soon as

I hear your song.

Another Day Together

Another Day Together

Leaves align on the branches.

Some wave above the others.

Some hang below.

Those in the middle may

be found lying down.

Whatever their position,

they put their colors on display.

Spend another day together

before they fall away.

Burst Out

Burst Out

Seeds that shelter while they grow

burst out when they are ready.

Get a lift from the wind.

Scatter in different directions.

Leave behind empty shells

that hold on despite their loss.

What's Missing

What's  Missing

What's missing is
a sound.
What's missing is
a sight.
What's missing is
a touch.
What's left is

a gap.

Another Fall

Another Fall

I first think of the leaves
as they change color,
then drift down.
Trees once full are now bare.
So much is lost.

But, there is another fall.

Pods grow and fill with seeds.
They burst open and let
their contents go.
Ground now bare
will be filled with
blossoms in spring.
So much is still to come.

Fall Approaches

Fall Approaches

The leaves are fully green,
tightly attached,
surrounded by companions.
How many days
will they remain so?
When will the red, yellow
or orange overtake them?
When will they lose touch?
When will they leave the tree
to bear winter on its own?

Hard to Watch

 Hard to Watch

It's hard to watch you go
even though I knew you would.
I thought I understood, but
it feels different when it happens.
The cushion of time flattens
and reality takes hold.
The distance between us grows.

The Last Leaf

The Last Leaf

The others are gone.
I miss watching them wave
and then waving back.
I crave the closeness,
the daily contact.

My turn will come soon.
I am not immune.
I can't hold on forever,
but today, I will try my best
not to fall.

This is a persona poem.

A Piece of Myself

A Piece of  Myself

 I left a piece
of myself behind
when I was
just a child.

I never bothered
to go back for it.
I thought it
wouldn't matter.

But, even after
all these years,
there are times
I wish I had it.

Growing Cycles

Growing Cycles

The bud and bloom
sit side by side.
The bloom shows
the bud its future.

Two blooms
sit side by side.
Then, one's petals
begin to drop.

A bloom
sits alone
until a new
bud grows.

Slipped Away

Slipped Away

The feather
simply lets go.
Whatever held
it to the body
doesn't anymore.

There was no attack.
This happened as
a matter of course.
Does the body know
what has slipped away?

Some Have Been Lost

Some Have Been Lost

We shared time together.
With some it was long,
with others too short.
We stood in sun and storm,
cold and warm, dark and light.
Then, they dropped out of sight
and left a space that remains
every day and every night.

Presence

Presence

I sense your presence.
Feel you stand next to me.
If I move, our
shoulders should touch.
Instead,  I move freely,
wishing I could bump
into you again.

As You Leave

As You Leave

I watch as you leave,
wishing you could stay.
I thought we'd have more time,
but the choice isn't mine.
You fade from view as the
distance between us grows.
I cling to my perch,
not ready to let go.

Remnants

Remnants

The pieces
remind us
of what was.

The spaces
highlight what
will never
be again.

This is what
will be now
and always.

The Departed

The Departed

Do you miss me?
I've stayed close by.
Can you feel me?
I'm right by your side.

I'm going to take a break. The next post will be July 11.
