Overwhelmed By It All

Overwhelmed By It All

Sometimes, I feel
overwhelmed by it all.
Darkness closing in.
Resistance from
every direction.
But, I keep
paddling along
until the light
comes into sight.

Hang On By A String

Hang On By A String

I don't need much
to hold me up.
A little assistance
and my own persistence.
When life is on one big downswing,
I can hang on by a string.

Keep Going

Keep Going

When you are in too deep,
do what you can to stay afloat.

Your next steps may be slippery,
so don't lose your footing.

Keep going until you
reach solid ground.

The Last Leaf

The Last Leaf

The others are gone.
I miss watching them wave
and then waving back.
I crave the closeness,
the daily contact.

My turn will come soon.
I am not immune.
I can't hold on forever,
but today, I will try my best
not to fall.

This is a persona poem.

Long Enough

Long Enough

How long has
the tree stood
in the woods?

Long enough to
thicken its trunk,
spread its branches,
increase its height.

Long enough to
be intruded upon
by other growth,
lose some limbs,
gain some scars.

Long enough to
stand where and
like it is
for another day.

Stumble

Stumble

It's easy to stumble.
Miss a step, catch yourself.
Keep going without giving it a thought.

It's easy to stumble.
Stub a toe, twist an ankle.
Work through the pain that lingers.

It's easy to stumble.
Take a tumble, hit the ground.
Start recovery with the next step.

Ready to Dive In

Ready to Dive In

I've always been
one to dive in.
What I've learned is
that I might not
make a big splash.
I may struggle to
get back to shore,
but I'll be ready
to dive in
at the next
opportunity.

The Walk

The Walk

Each step matters.
Go ahead, take one
then another.
Not too close
to the edge.
Try to stay
on solid ground.
Don't be afraid
to look around.
You can still
go forward
if you slip
into the sand.
It just takes
more effort.
Rest when you're
weary, set
your own pace.
You may even
need to retrace
a few strides.
Keep going.
You're making progress.
