Keep Them Safe

Keep Them Safe

I stand guard,
my senses on alert.
It is my turn
to keep them safe.
Sound the alarm.
Prevent any harm.

Love at First Sight

Love at First Sight

As I walked into
the nursery, a
patch of red
caught my eye.
I went straight
towards it.
Sitting in a corner
was a deep red
daylily.
The color was
beautiful, and
it made the petals
look velvety.
I was smitten.

We have been
together for
several years now.
The flower has
survived my fawning
and my neglect.
Every spring, I
wait for the
buds to open.
When I see the
color, as bril-
liant as ever,
I am still
drawn to it.

Time to Go

Time to Go

It's time for
me to go.
I know you think
it is too soon.
Won't it always
be for you?
I leave lessons
learned and love.
I also take
them with me.

The Red Rose

The Red Rose

Whether I bloom
in June or October,
I am a symbol of love.

Whether I stand
in light or darkness,
I am a symbol of love.

Whether I am
cherished or neglected,
I am a symbol of love.

As long as I am,
I am a symbol of love.

The Heart is Left

The Heart is Left

After the loss,
the heart is
left to mourn.
Keep the beat
so there is a
rhythm to each day.
Pump a new life
into the love
that lingers.

To the Author

To the Author

I am submerged
in the words.
Surrounded
by your choice
of nouns, towns,
sights and sounds.
The characters
you created; the
stories you related.

No more will come.
You have left
 all you could.
Every time
I read them,
I am immersed
in your love of words.

I wrote this poem as part of Robert Lee Brewer's 2015 November PAD Chapbook Challenge. The prompt was submerged.

Alike

Alike

I am a human being. I consider nothing that is human
alien to me.-Terence, often quoted by Dr. Maya Angelou

We are more
the same than not,
but more is not
enough for some.
They let looks
get in the way.
Or, how we speak or
to whom we pray.
We all feel
warmth in a smile,
joy in a child,
peace for a while,
pain as hurt,
anger surge,
hatred burn.
I am in you and
you are in me.
When we can see
our similarity
 at first glance,
we can share the
best of our humanity.
We can love.
