I consider Emily Dickinson to be my "Guardian Poet". For most of the year in which I wrote the two poems that started me on this adventure, references to Emily Dickinson kept showing up in books I read. Now, I read mostly light fiction, especially mysteries, biographies (not of poets) or books about sports. All of a sudden, if an author put a quote at the front of a book, it was from a Dickinson poem or characters would mention that she was their favorite poet or they were studying her in a class. After about a year, I wrote a poem about this.
I haven't heard from Emily in a while, but then she popped up this weekend. So, I am posting the poem today.
Emily
You haunt me.
Your appearances jolt,
intrude on my solitude,
inhabit my thoughts.
Your visits puzzle.
I explore your talent,
but the message alludes.
Our encounters continue,
baffling or revealing?

It's wonderful that you're touched by her works so much that you'd write a work of your own. :)

Thought I would try to put some of what I was learning from her to good use! Thanks for stopping by from TALU and for following.
DeleteYou know as I get old I have become intrigued about the lives of poets. I've been reading more non-fiction lately than I ever have. I might explore the lives of some of my favorites. I don't know anything about her other than the image of her that I have in my head. TALU
ReplyDeleteYou might want to check out "My Poets" by Maureen N. McLane. She writes about poets who influenced her and, in doing so, tells about their lives and hers. Emily Dickinson is one of them. TALU
DeleteI find it interesting but kind of creepy when things like that keep happening. For me, it's movies. I'll talk about a movie, turn on the TV that night and it will be on. The weirdest was getting into a conversation with someone about Motzart one day, which lead to Amadeus. I went home that night and the DVD was sitting on my bed. I freaked out!! Turned out my roommate's son had been by and thought I might want it LOL. Still weird timing since I was just talking about it, but not scary weird just appearing out of thin air. ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah, Chris. I remember having a song running through my mind and turning on the radio and it was on. do,do,do,do do,do,do,do TALU
DeleteOoooh, I love this poem, Michelle! I'll bet she would be so honored....
