Mosaic

Pieces of ice form

a floating mosaic.

The shards create

a new whole

of their own design.

One that is temporary,

continually changed by

movement and time.

Full Bloom

The wintry mixes will end.

The snow will melt.

Breath will be heard

but not seen.

The trees will fill with leaves.

The daffodils will open.

Spring will be in full bloom.

It can't happen too soon.

Breaking the Ice

Don't pound away.

Work around the edges.

Look for cracks and spots

that have started to thaw.

Slide the scraper

underneath and lift.

Accept whatever

breaks off, large or small.

Clean up the pieces.

Then, start again.

The Blue Comes Through

The clouds mask the sky.

Eclipse all brightness.

Cover the sun and the moon.

Don't allow the North Star to

help you figure out where you are.

The gray stays day after day.

Then, one day, when it parts,

the blue begins to come through.

I go outside to feel

the sun and watch

the geese swim.

I see the trees hold

a pose that beckons

to new leaves.

As I take in all

that Mother Nature

offers me, I shiver.
