Camouflage

Camouflage

Branches hang, hiding the rock.
Underbrush grows up.
They make the stone hard to see,
obscured by the leaves.
Joy turns to pain when
those who rush toward the brush
hit a wall instead.

This poem is written in a Spanish form, Seguidilla, which sets parameters for number of lines, line length and rhyme scheme.

Sit Still

The butterflies flit
then sit upon the flowers.
Still, yet set to go.

Rough Waters

Rough Waters

The water is
in motion.
It swirls around.
Makes waves that rock
everything that
tries to ride them.
There is no sign
it will calm down.
Can you handle
the turbulence?

The America That I Love

The America That I Love

The America that I love
offered a home to immigrants
who sought freedom of religion
and an escape from tyranny.
Our freedoms of speech, the press and
peaceful assembly symbolize
the America that I love.

We have never been perfect, but
we have worked to improve and our
democracy has been admired.
Now, we stray from the essence of
the America that I love.

This poem is written in the form called a rondine.

Wings

Wings

The wings of the cardinal
are bright red, decorated
with feathers and
flap steadily.

The wings of the bee
are clear, decorated
with lines and
move frenetically.

When the bird
and the bee fly,
the wings they have
give them all
the lift they need.

Odyssey

Odyssey

This is the trip that I must take.
I am the one to navigate
a new course, unplanned.
Notice all I can.
I will land,
trusting fate.

An Apology to Rachel Carson

An Apology to Rachel Carson

I want to be one of
the first to apologize.
You could not have tried
any harder, working
against the hands
of Death's clock.
And, after some resistance,
it seemed that your
message had gotten through.
But now, I am sorry
to tell you that more
threats have arisen.
Decades after your
work and in a
different century,
the good done by
the movement you
sparked may be undone.
We will return to polluted
rivers and streams,
chemically-poisoned land fills
and, of course, oil spills.
I apologize that,
somehow, we let our
guard down and didn't
see the turnaround coming.
I do pledge that neither spring
nor any of the other seasons
will be silent--our voices
will create a buzz.

Renewing My Spirit

Renewing My Spirit

I needed to
recede from the chaos,
reclaim some sanity.

I rallied with people
who recharged my energy.

Received a peek into
the future that
restored my faith.

Regained my balance and
am ready to face the
the next challenge.
