One falls near the plant.
I hope it grows there.
Others ride the wind out of the yard.
Their destination is unknown.
Some hold on to the only home they've had.
The next gust makes them scatter.

In the dead of winter,
the cold has a bite.
The clouds are gray.
The trees are bare.
The animals take flight.
As my spirits sink,
I come upon a pod
still full of seeds.
It holds on
despite the elements.

It's hard to see.

A hawk tried to grab a duck
from the water, but other ducks
launched a counterattack.
The hawk escaped to
the shelter of a tree.
Bested this time, the hawk rested.
Still hungry, it will hunt again soon.
