Sparkles
One cloudy morning,
I was sad about
the prevailing dark.
When would the sun come out?
Then I went to the park.
As I walked beside the lake,
sparkles appeared on the water.
The sun shares its light
in different ways.

In the Dark
I find myself in the dark.
Can't recognize the landmarks.
I come upon something bright
that alleviates my fright.

Open to the Light
Open to the Light
Even in my darkest hour, there is light.
My eyes cannot see it at first.
They need time to adjust.
Then, they find the shapes
that mean I am not alone.
They take in the beauty that
still surrounds me every day.
They rest on things that make me smile.
They open to the light once again.
The prompt for this poem was "darkest hour."

the sky,

Glow
The light makes a splash.
Brightens random places.
Leaves shadows
in other spaces.
The eye-catching glow
garners all the attention.
We love shiny things.
The shadows sit
in the background,
serene and self-assured.
They know there are places
that the light will never reach.

Noises in the Night
Noises in the night
are amplified.
Background sounds
have been put to bed.
What made that thud?
Was it inside or out?
Grab the phone and
look around.
A motor starts.
The car pulls away.
Calm is restored
and sleep follows.
Do you hear things go bump in the night? Are you more aware of these sounds as Halloween approaches?

Equinox

Equinox
Dark and light
fill our days.
Usually, one
outweighs the other.
Light increases
until it reaches
its maximum number
of hours then
retreats in small
increments, letting
darkness reign.
But twice each year,
light and dark
call a truce and
give us a day
we share equally
with the two.
