Heads in the Clouds

Heads in the Clouds

The Man in the Moon
gets all the attention,
but there are plenty
of heads in the clouds.

The faces may be
serious, fluffy or
a little scruffy.
Reclining, pining
or bright and
shining with the
light of the sun.

Put a smile on
your face whenever
you look up.
If you are lucky,
it will be returned.

What do you see in the clouds?

Benched

Benched

Sit with me.
Close your eyes,
stare into space or
take a look
around this place.

Take a break
to catch your breath
or to deliberate on
what to do next.

Take your time.
I’m doing fine.
I’m strong enough
to support you
until you’re ready
to move on.

Thanks to Carol Early Cooney for this week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt. If you have a special bench in your life, share a link to your thoughts about it in the comments on the blog post.

Handpicked

Handpicked

You opened
with good reason.
Secure in the
warmth of the season.
Then Nature,
with its fickle ways,
dialed back the temperature
to the point at which
you might freeze.
You were handpicked
and brought inside.
Your end
wouldn't come from
the shock of cold.
Instead, you would reside
in comfort
for at least
a few days longer.

Change the Calendar

Change the Calendar

I've spent months
on the finest golf courses.
I've spent months
on London's streets.
I've spent months
back in my hometown.
I've spent months
viewing wondrous scenes.
Now, I tend to spend my months
filling little boxes on a screen.

Thanks to Rebecca Barray for this week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt-Calendar. What thoughts do calendars conjure up for you? Share them in the comments on the blog post.

Iced

Iced

Trees grew
glass-like
encasements
that glistened
in the
day-after sun.
The weight
of winter
bent branches
to the
breaking point.
Destruction
disguised as
beauty.

Have your trees been iced this winter?

Apricot Filling

Apricot Filling

When Mom made
the koclaczki at Christmas,
the apricot filling
was made from
canned pie filling and jam.
Then one year,
she made the filling from
dried apricots cooked down.
I never asked why
she made the change.
Maybe dried apricots
became more affordable
or more accessible.
Now when I make
the cookies at Christmas,
I don't use pie filling
and I don't use jam.
I only use
dried apricots cooked down.
Oh, and a little lemon juice.

Sink Side Songs

Sink Side Songs

I sat holding your hand
when the music started.
You seemed to listen.
I don't know where
 the notes took you,
but I remembered
hearing you sing while
 you did the dishes.
It was really humming
with some la de da's and
de de dum's thrown in.
Begin the Beguine,
a song about memories,
was one of your favorites.
I still think of you
whenever I hear it.

Prepared for Landing

Prepared for Landing

Seat belt buckled.
Seat back and tray upright.
Trash discarded.
 Carry-on under the
the seat in front of you.
 The ground got closer.
 The wheels met the land.
You reached your final destination,
and the turbulence began.

Thanks to Kasie Whitener for this week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt-Preparation. Are you prepared? If so, for what? Let us know in the comments on the blog post.
