Watch the Petals

Watch the Petals

Watch the
petals unfold.
They stand tall,
colorful and strong.
Look radiant in
the sun.
Some are beaten
down by storms
while they are
still young.
Others hold on,
fade and fall.
Blow away
in the wind
or return to
the soil.

No Need to Turn Around

No Need to Turn Around

No need to turn around, it's me.
I have always been behind
you and I always will be.
I'm not an ordinary memory.
I'm no longer here, but
I will never be gone.
No need to turnaround, it's me.

To My Pencil

To My Pencil

Your kind has been
discarded by most,
but I am proud
to boast that I
still use a pencil.
When I put words
down on paper with
you, I feel a freedom
I don't with a keyboard.
You allow me to play
while the keys seem
to be all business.
We create fine
lines together.
Mostly importantly,
I trust you to help me
make my point.

Move On

Move On

I don't know how long
the heron has been
fishing when I spot it.
It stands in the water
and focuses forward.
Lowers its head to
take a closer look.
Barely moves its feet
to inch forward.
Goes through several
repetitions of this routine.
Suddenly, it jumps
onto the ledge that
runs the width of
the lake, folds its
wings and moves on.

Gardening

Gardening

I choose the plants
and where they will live.
I observe them as they
get taller and spread.
I see how buds become
flowers--pop open,
unfold or unroll.
I take in the colors
and the scents.
I worry that the
wind will toss them
around or the rain
 will beat them down.
I worry that the
temperature
is too hot
or too cold.
I know that
sometimes I
do things wrong,
but I try hard
to keep the plants
healthy and strong.

Rain

Rain

The rain comes down.
The noise reaches a crescendo.
The rain comes down.
Lightning flashes all over town.
The flood water becomes a foe.
We will be okay even though
the rain comes down.

This poem is a rondelet.

Turn to the Water

Turn to the Water

I turn to the water.
Breathe in rhythm with the waves.
A stillness comes over me.
I could stand here all day.
I feel myself relax.
Everything will be OK.
When I turn to the water,
my worries wash away.

Away from the Crowd

Away from the Crowd

I move away
from the crowd.
I no longer
see, hear or
feel its members.
I do not go far,
only the distance
I need to be at peace.

Niagara Falls

This blog post is part word play and part Throwback Thursday. During the April Poem A Day Challenge, I wrote a poem about Niagara Falls. Of course, a day later I had another idea; so I wrote the quirky little poem you see below.

I also remembered that I had a few color film prints of the falls that I took in the late 1980's. It was a miracle that the pictures were where I thought they would be. The photo below was taken with one of the many automatic cameras of the day. I did use the editing program on my Ipad to enhance the color and provide more delineation between the sky and the top of the falls.

Have you been to Niagara Falls?

Niagara Falls

continually,
powerfully,
beautifully
and,
hopefully,
eternally.
