No Stopping Us

No Stopping Us

We are blind to
the big red sign.
Some slow down
to a crawl.
Some don't cut
speed at all,
just glance both
ways and keep going.
Be alert. Two ways
or four ways, we're
all coming through.

This poem was inspired by a Wednesday prompt on Robert Lee Brewer's Poetic Asides blog. The prompt was "alert."

Silence for the Poets

Silence for the Poets
Dedicated to Martha Gershun, Maryfrances Wagner,
Thomas Cobian, Rick Malsick and Music+ Poetry+Art

Silence for the poets.
They deserve to be heard.

Silence for the poets.
Talking over them is absurd.

Silence for the poets.
Listen to every word.

Silence for the poets
or punishment will be incurred.

Music+Poetry+Art is a quarterly arts scene held on Friday nights at the Downtown Neon Gallery in Kansas City, MO. The next event will be in October.

Caught in a Web

Caught in a Web

In midair, swinging
in the breeze, but
not going anywhere.
You'll take a fall
with the slightest tear.
How long can you
stay there, hanging
by a thread?

Building Blocks

Building Blocks

The mason creates
row upon row
stone by stone.
Sets each in
its own space
with precision.
He alone knows
where they belong
and what will
take shape under
his guidance.

Thrown Together

Thrown Together

Wind gusts hit hard,
blow us around.
beat us down.
We are wrapped up
in the storm.
After, we
still hold on,
in no hurry
 to untangle.

Harmonizing

Writing is full of surprises. I've been surprised by ideas, memories and the direction pieces took while I was writing them. Yesterday, I was surprised by a response that was elicited by one of my poems. I'm going to let my friend and fellow writer, Letty Stapp Watt, tell the story:

What kinds of surprises have you received while writing or in response to your work?

It Hasn't Rained Yet

It Hasn't Rained Yet

It hasn't rained yet,
but it surely will.
The air looks damp,
hard to see through.
The day looks gray,
missing sunlight.
The clouds look heavy,
need unburdening.
It hasn't rained yet,
but it surely will.

No Outlet

No Outlet

Sometimes, I miss
the sign until I'm
into the turn.
No Outlet.
What should
I do next?
Curse because
I wasn't alert?
Give in to despair
and go nowhere or
go back to the
main road and take
another route?
I'm only at a
dead end if
I refuse to
make a move.

This week's Wednesday prompt on Robert Lee Brewer's Poetic Asides Blog is to write a dead poem.
