First Visit

First Visit

I am speechless.
Could it be an
image projected
before me, like
the movie I watch
later in the day?
No, it is real.
Copper and green,
red and bone.
Jagged peaks
touched by the sun
or draped in shadow.
This must be the
canyon's most
majestic scene.
I take a
few more steps
around the rim.
The colors and
shapes change.
The view is
different, but
no less grand.

The Heart is Left

The Heart is Left

After the loss,
the heart is
left to mourn.
Keep the beat
so there is a
rhythm to each day.
Pump a new life
into the love
that lingers.

Coffee Break

Coffee Break

By nature,
a procrastinator,
I awoke early
to finish writing
my last paper
in high school.
The typewriter had
made a few clicks
when I heard my
Mother's footsteps.
Steeled to receive
a scolding, I was
offered a cup of coffee.
"You don't like it
when I do this."
She shrugged.
"You get good grades."
I went back to work,
sipped the warm liquid
and smiled.

Did you procrastinate when it came to homework? Do you procrastinate now?

Scars

Scars

A scar gives witness
to the hurt and the healing.
Which one do you see?

Inside Story

Inside Story

What we hide
inside does not
die in silence.
It whispers
to us during
our quietest hours.
Stores up great power.
Emotions felt
but not spent
remain attached
to our memories,
ready to break out
from behind walls
made out of fear.

Shade

Shade

I will give you shade.
Think of it as:
coolness not coldness,
dimness not darkness,
refuge not retreat.
Respite from the
warmth of the sun
when it starts to burn.

Stand Out

Stand Out

Above the bland
homogenized crowd,
your appearance
is golden.
You rise
to full height,
sight lines clear.
Everything you
stand for is in focus.

Spanners

Spanners

The gaping hole
that looks so wide
becomes part of
a short ride
when the
connection is made
between two sides.
Bridge the gap.

Dance

Dance

Petals uncurl
Stretch to their
longest length
Reach their
widest width
Turn toward
the sun
Bend in
the rain
Lift with
the wind
Dance to
celebrate
their openness

Which of your flowers are celebrating their openness?
