Tough to See


 Tough to See

I find it tough to see
things right in front of me.
At times, that is meant to be.
Nature builds in this shield.
Otherwise, I hold the key.
Choose to reject what is revealed.

I used the stanza length and rhyme scheme from the Burns stanza.

Bark

I am the suit of armor
tailor-made for the tree.
I stand against
the rain and wind,
the heat and cold,
the insects and animals.
My life has already ended.
In my afterlife, I
protect the place
I once lived.

Startling

Unbeknownst to me,
a duck sits
by the shore.
It is shielded
by foliage.
The leaves crunch
under my foot
when I step
toward the water.
The duck moves
as I stop.
We are startled
by our encounter.

Shade

I will give you shade.
Think of it as:
coolness not coldness,
dimness not darkness,
refuge not retreat.
Respite from the
warmth of the sun
when it starts to burn.
