Flight Pattern

Flight Pattern

You fall into a pattern.
Spread your wings and glide.
Slice through the air.
Tilt to take the turn
then return to autopilot.
Fly for miles, retracing
the circle so you end
where you begin again.

Planted

Planted

Where will you go to
grow,
put down roots,
stand tall,
reach for the sun,
survive the storms,
feel secure in
your spot of earth?

Freestyle

Freestyle

The duck ghosts atop the water.
A crack swimmer, it is content
in the company of only
the wake that it creates.
The bird knows this time
alone is limited so it checks
to see if the raft is at hand.
With the group nowhere in sight,
it continues the journey--freestyle.

Thanks to Robert Lee Brewer for his continuing Wednesday prompts on Poetic Asides. While writing this poem, I learned a new definition for ghost (glide smoothly) and raft (a group of ducks).

Gathering Place

Gathering Place

What draws you to
your favorite spot?
Is it an easy
place to stop?
Does it have a
casual ambience and
serve your type
of comfort food?
Or do you go because
it feels like home,
filled with your
family of choice?

An Imposing Beauty

An Imposing Beauty

Layers of history
build up while time
chips away at the face.
The elements leave scars
and carve decorations.
Through it all, the rock
sits regally, still
yet ever changing.

Guardian of the Sun

Guardian of the Sun

How does it feel to
swallow the sun
each night for safekeeping?

Are you anxious for
the dawn or saddened
by its arrival?

What is it like to
return light and warmth
to the world each morning?

Does this act awaken
the same in you?

Curves

Curves

I get taken in
by the curve.
Force myself
to slow down
as I approach.
Make that natural lean
as I follow the arc.
Begin to accelerate,
careful not to cross the line.
Find myself back on
the mundane straightway
and search for signs
of the next curve.

Wandering

Wandering

How does the
grasshopper feel
when it wanders
off the grass?
How long
before it misses
the waving blades?
Does it feel
exposed without them?
Does it reflect on
where it stands now?
Explore what it has
found not fret about
what it left behind?
Know it can choose
a new direction anytime?

Memorable

Memorable

Every flower isn't perfect.
Sometimes the parts are
assembled in a different way.
The petals are in disarray.
The center isn't on display.
Of all the flowers the garden
gives to me, these are the
ones I hold in my memory.
