Signals of Fall

Signals of Fall

Some leaves turn red.

They do not stop.

Some leaves turn yellow.

They do not slow down.

The leaves turn because

the green must go.

Fall Colors

Fall Colors

Fall colors fall as

reflections on the lake.

They appear and disappear

from day-to-day.

Fall colors fall as

the leaves let go.

Blanket the ground

then the wind comes along.

Fall colors fall until

they all are gone.

Safe Travels

Safe Travels

Another year has gone by.

The time has come for me to travel.

Take the same old route.

I give you one more hug

then I start my journey.

Your wish for safe travels

will accompany me all the way.

No Change

No Change

The temperature sinks.

Wind adds a chill.

Clouds keep the day gray.

The calendar says spring is here,

but the weather hasn't changed.

A Limited Time

A Limited Time

A lack of leaves
allows longer sightlines.
Lovely land, usually blocked,
comes to light.
Look and linger.
The display lasts
for a limited time.

October

October

I see the blooms.
It could be June.
Instead, the first
string of fall
temperatures arrive.
Numbers we haven't seen
since before the phlox
started to bloom,
since before this year
had a June.
Now, there is a chill again.
We and the flowers have
fallen into October.

Watch the Petals

Watch the Petals

Watch the
petals unfold.
They stand tall,
colorful and strong.
Look radiant in
the sun.
Some are beaten
down by storms
while they are
still young.
Others hold on,
fade and fall.
Blow away
in the wind
or return to
the soil.

The Leaves Begin to Fill the Trees Again

The Leaves Begin to Fill the Trees Again

The leaves begin to
fill the trees again.
The branches hang
differently, as if
they are showing
off new clothes.
The green stands out
against the clouds.
The rustle returns
when the wind blows.
I know all these things
will happen each spring.
Yet, as they do, I
can't help but feel
the excitement anew.

When Fall Arrives

When Fall Arrives

When fall arrives,
a different beauty
lives in the trees.
The leaves put on
a colorful show
before they let go.

When fall arrives,
the air turns cool.
Not cold enough
to make us hide,
but we use a
jacket to go outside.

When fall arrives
and summer ends,
the birds take wing,
leave town and then
make us wait till spring
to see them again.

Withered

Withered

The flower is withered.
Dry and brittle, its color gone.
Most that bloomed when
it did have let go.
This one sits and
watches the green
sprout around it.
It doesn't fear the fall
but won't hasten it either.
Not while it still enjoys the view.

The Fall

The Fall

The changes creep in.
The sameness turns
to difference.
Solid green becomes
red, yellow and orange.
The threads of
attachment break
and the leaves fall.
The trees are quieted,
their rustle silenced
until spring.

Change of Seasons

Change of Seasons

Summer turns to autumn.
Leaves turn red and gold.
Warmth turns to coolness.
Thoughts turn to change.

Autumn turns to winter.
Trees turn bare.
Coolness turns to cold.
Thoughts turn to snow.

Milestones

Seasons

Spring arrives
Gardens grow
Summer colors
Blooms abound
Fall descends
Rich harvest
Winter snows
Dormancy
Spring arrives
Gardens grow

Unseasonable

Unseasonable

Spring teases the
Midwest this year.
It just doesn’t
want to stay here.
Temperatures rise
then take a dive.
Plants come alive
then fight to survive.
The calves are unsettled.
The humans are nettled.
Surely things will calm down
when summer comes round.

I had to save these from a previous cold snap.

Has spring arrived where you live or does winter keep making a comeback?
