Sweet Sounds

Sweet Sounds

They play in my mind.

There was a time when

the music was live,

Now, the player has gone.

Sweet sounds are

 memories I can't help

but turn on.

This poem was written for prompt 2 of the November PAD Chapbook Challenge.

Got the Blues

Got the Blues

Got the blues in my head.
I hope you'll excuse me.

Got the blues in my heart.
I couldn't refuse them.

Got the blues in my walk.
I don't know how to soothe them.

Got the blues everywhere
and I can't lose them.

I Leaned On You

I Leaned On You

(In memory of Bill Withers)

I leaned on you
when I felt sorrow
and didn't want to face
another tomorrow.

I leaned on you
when I had too much pride
to show the feelings I
held inside.

I leaned on you
and the notes took command.
The words touched me like they
could understand.

I'll lean on you again
even though you are gone
because the music will
carry on.

After the Concert

After the Concert

The music comes with me.
The voices still sing.
The rhythms run through me.
The words fill my mind.
Time passes by before I
can sleep after the concert.

The prompt for Day 6 of the PAD Challenge was a fill-in-the-blank--after _______.  I invite you to go to one of the challenge pages and browse. I think you will enjoy the variety of work that is inspired by a single prompt.

Make Your Own Music

Make Your Own Music

Maybe you will sing songs.
Maybe you will play guitar.

Maybe you will use a whistle.
Maybe you will make meals sizzle.

Maybe you will hammer nails.
Maybe you will make cars hum.

 Whatever you decide to do,
 make your own music.

The Music of the Trees

The Music of the Trees

The leaves return in spring
and with them comes
the music of the trees.
Under the direction
of the wind, they
start their movement and
create a contrary song.
For the stronger the breeze,
the louder the leaves go,
"shhhhhhh, shhhhhhh."

Stage Fright

Stage Fright

The hands hover above the keyboard.
They hesitate to start.
They know the notes by heart,
but are afraid to touch the keys.
The hands hover, waiting for
the mind to let them play.

Blue Notes

Blue Notes

Blue notes are soft and low.
I am drawn to the sound.
Reminds me of the pain
wrapped 'round me like a chain.

I inhale the music,
hold it in my lungs then
exhale real slow.
Reluctant to let go.

Blue notes fill the air.
They aren't going anywhere.
So, I let them embrace me
like arms I cannot see.

In the Shadows

In the Shadows

I feel the shadows
hang over me.
The absence of warmth
caused by the shade.
The weight of the past
that I carry with me
always but feel more
at times like these.
The knowledge of
what is lost and
what will never be.
Still, if I squint hard
enough, I  see the form
that reminds me to
listen for the music,
even in the darkness.

Sink Side Songs

Sink Side Songs

I sat holding your hand
when the music started.
You seemed to listen.
I don't know where
 the notes took you,
but I remembered
hearing you sing while
 you did the dishes.
It was really humming
with some la de da's and
de de dum's thrown in.
Begin the Beguine,
a song about memories,
was one of your favorites.
I still think of you
whenever I hear it.

This poem was inspired by a prompt on The Slow Forget, a website started by J.Lynn Sheridan to share experiences with Alzheimer's Disease and dementia through poetry. Join us by writing or reading.

Challenging

I can't believe we are almost at the end of the Our Lost Jungle Thirty by Thirty Challenge. Thanks to Khara House for the prompts and words of wisdom. I liked the inspirational quotes that were part of each prompt post.

Khara designed this challenge to help foster habits of creativity. For me, it has reinforced the motto-Don't think. Write!

When I started responding to prompts, I tried to think my way to the poems. Now, I write my way to them. I just start writing down words-rhymes, synonyms, antonyms. A phrase or sentence will pop up. Before long, I hit upon the word or fragment that gives me the idea I want to pursue. I even tried putting 10 minutes on a timer and was surprised how often the idea came to me within just a few minutes.

Sometimes the result is a completed poem, sometimes it's a fragment that I think has potential and sometimes it's a dud. No matter the result, the best part of responding to prompts is seeing where the words lead me.

I'm looking forward to the next Our Lost Jungle Challenge. I know Khara's working on it!

The following poem was in response to the prompt-Sentiment.

Triggers

I sat in the car
listening to the music,
tears running
down my cheeks.
It reminded me
that you would
never grow old and
that you were the
one who helped me soar.

I don't need the songs
to think of you; but
when I hear them,
I'm taken back in time.
So, I sit in the car
and listen.
