Wishful Thinking

Wishful Thinking

I wish I had such things
as fairy wings and magic wands.
I'd use them to fly above the fray
or wave all the challenges away.

Alas, I cannot cast a spell
to help myself or someone else.
I have only human powers
to survive the tears and fears
that I'll confront throughout the years.

I cannot soar above the fray,
but must face it everyday.

Summer Reading-The Game's Afoot

The Game's Afoot

The solitary cyclist rode by
the Priory School as the
three students came out.
"Have you seen the
dancing men?" he asked.
"No," they replied. "Why
don't you ask Charles
Milverton Augustus?"
"He went to the empty house
to speak to the Norwood builder,"
Further up the road, the cyclist
 saw the noble bachelor
wandering among the copper beeches.
He was wearing his golden
pince-nez and examining
the blue carbuncle.
"Have you seen the
dancing men?"
"Yes, they went
to Wisteria Lodge to
entertain the Red-Headed League.
The creeping man says
this will be his last bow.

How many references to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes can you find? What tops your reading list this summer?

Tournament Time

Tournament Time

The ball travels
 from hand to floor
        hand to floor
         hand to floor.
The rhythm as steady
as the clock ticking down.

Suddenly, the thumping stops.
The player takes the shot.
Will it be a swish?
Kiss the backboard and drop in?
Clang! It ricochets off the rim.

Game over.
Another team gets bounced.

Benched

Benched

Sit with me.
Close your eyes,
stare into space or
take a look
around this place.

Take a break
to catch your breath
or to deliberate on
what to do next.

Take your time.
I’m doing fine.
I’m strong enough
to support you
until you’re ready
to move on.

Thanks to Carol Early Cooney for this week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt. If you have a special bench in your life, share a link to your thoughts about it in the comments on the blog post.

Hidden in the Music

Hidden in the Music

is a secret
you are willing to reveal
only with this type of note.
Do words fail you
or is the message
simply easier to play?
The listener tries
to figure out
what you want to say.
The music speaks
to each of us
in a different way.
If we listen closely
will we discover
what resides in
the deepest part of you or
the deepest part of us?

How do you use notes or notebooks?

Chill

A Chilly Night

Pumpkins grow faces and
skeletons adorn
unusual places.
The chill may be
in the air or
from the scare of
a story I've read.
Who's there?
I swear I felt a tap
on the shoulder.
Did a ghost
get that close or
was I just frightened
 by my own shadow?

What gives you a chill? When you come up with the answer, leave a link to it on the Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt blog post. Thanks to Carol Early Cooney for this week's prompt-Chill.

Line

A Fine Line

Long, straight and
step-on-a-crack,
break-your-mother's-back
hard.
Get in, stay in,
stand in and wait in.
Hold it or keep it moving.
Just don't cross it.

Thanks to Carol Early Cooney for this week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt. What's your line? Put a link to it in the comments on the blog post.

Basket

Rocking Horse

The rocking horse
moves back and forth
at a steady pace,
staying in one place.

The child on its back
travels here or there.
Transported to a
chosen destination
by imagination.

Who’s really being
taken for a ride?

This week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt is Basket. Write a poem or story, take a photograph or use any other art form to produce a piece inspired by the word Basket. Put a link to it in the comments on the blog post. Thanks to Carol Early Cooney for this week's prompt.

Graphic

When I hear the word graphic, I think of graphic artists, design, shapes and lines. So, when I saw that  graphic was this week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt, I headed out to one of my favorite subjects.

This tower is in my neighborhood and on my morning walk route. As you can see, it is the place to hangout at breakfast time in the bird world. I often photograph the birds sitting atop it, but I also like to photograph the different shapes made by the tower itself and the intersection of the various wires. Feel free to play "Count the Triangles", but I warn you, you will see more and more the longer you look. Even tiny ones count!

Thanks to Carol Early Cooney for this week's prompt. What do you think of when you hear the word graphic? Leave a link to your interpretation in the comments on the prompt post.

Chip

This week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt is Chip. After giving this prompt some thought, I came up with the above visual representation of an old saying. Want to hazard a guess?

Why "a chip off the old block," of course.

What does chip make you think of? Post a link to your response in the comments on the prompt page. Thanks to Carol Early Cooney for this prompt.
