Summer Reading-The Game's Afoot

The Game's Afoot

The solitary cyclist rode by
the Priory School as the
three students came out.
"Have you seen the
dancing men?" he asked.
"No," they replied. "Why
don't you ask Charles
Milverton Augustus?"
"He went to the empty house
to speak to the Norwood builder,"
Further up the road, the cyclist
 saw the noble bachelor
wandering among the copper beeches.
He was wearing his golden
pince-nez and examining
the blue carbuncle.
"Have you seen the
dancing men?"
"Yes, they went
to Wisteria Lodge to
entertain the Red-Headed League.
The creeping man says
this will be his last bow.

How many references to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes can you find? What tops your reading list this summer?

Tuesday Photo-Books

When I saw that this week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt was Books, I knew exactly which book I would photograph.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of  my oldest and most read books. You can see the wear along the edges of the binding and evidence that the book has been opened and closed many times. There is even a bit of unraveling going on. Only one small panel of the dust jacket remains and it is missing a corner. I have turned it into a bookmark.

To read more about my adventures with Sherlock, see a previous post-Elementary, My Dear Poet.

Thanks to Rebecca Barray for this week's photo prompt. Take a picture of one or some of your books and post a link to the photo in the comments on the prompt post.

Elementary, My Dear Poet

I am a lifelong Sherlock Holmes fan, but I don't consider myself a purist. I love to re-read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works, but I am not opposed to newer Holmes stories. I like to look through the shelves in libraries and bookstores and see the predicaments in which other authors have placed Sherlock and Watson. I have even enjoyed Holmes on Broadway, the big screen and the little screen.

So, it was no wonder when Robert Lee Brewer posted a prompt to write about something that happened "before your time" during the April Poem-a-Day Challenge, my thoughts immediately turned to 221B Baker Street...

Interlude

Hansom cabs
clatter through
the foggy street.
The plaintive notes
of a violin fill

an apartment above.
The player wishes
he were making
different notes.
Ones that would
help recreate
the actions of others
as only he can.
For now,
he does not turn
to the needle
instead of the bow.
While the detective
battles boredom,
the good doctor
puts past glories
down on paper.
