Water

This time of year in the Midwest, you see all kinds of sprinklers going. They are various shapes and sizes. Sometimes when you play golf, sprinklers will come on unexpectedly or you way have to wait while the grounds crew waters a green.

This week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt is Water. Give us your interpretation of water in words or images by posting a link in the comments on the blog post. Thanks to Dana Dampier for this prompt.

Wish You Were Here

This week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt is Wish You Were Here. The idea is to talk about your summer vacation.

Since I haven't gone out of town yet this summer, I'm going to tell you something about Kansas City, Missouri, that you might not know. It is just one of many reasons why Kansas City is a great place to visit and a great place to take a staycation if you live here.

Kansas City is known as the "City of Fountains" and has more operating fountains than any other city in the world, except Rome. Click this link to the city's website to see more beautiful fountains.

What's your response to the prompt "Wish You Were Here?" Post a link to it in the comments on the prompt page. Thanks to Kasie Whitener for this prompt.

Summer Sunrise

This time of year, the sunrise is a little northeast. It comes up among the houses rather than at the end of the street, like it does later in the year.

I can't move around much or the houses block the sun.  I really like the cloud formations in this shot and wanted to capture as many of them as I could. Consequently, the power lines came into play.

I think this is still an interesting photograph with the power lines in it. What do you think? Are the power lines spoilers or do they add another dimension?

This week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt is Summer. Create a response in your favorite genre and post a link to it in the comments on the prompt page. Thanks to Rebecca Barray for this week's prompt.

A New Chapter

I planted this daisy two years ago at the beginning of what turned out to be a very hot summer. I didn't think it survived the heat that year. I could always see a little bit of green, but it was so burned out that I thought I had lost it.

Last spring, some leaves started to sprout in the spot where the daisy had been. To be honest, I didn't know if it was the daisy or a weed. Because of the location, I decided to let the plant grow and see what happened. It continued to grow through the summer, but didn't flower.

This year, I was happy to see buds appearing. The picture shows the first flower in two years, not quite fully opened, and a couple of the other buds in the background.

This is my daisy's new chapter. It is strong and in full bloom.

A New Chapter is this week's Wordsmith Studio Creative Prompt. What does this prompt bring to mind? Write prose or poetry, take a picture or draw one. Put a link to your response in the comment section of the prompt post. Thanks to Dana Dampier for this prompt.

Tuesday Photo-Rain

Walking in the neighborhood the morning after a storm, I captured these raindrops on the leaves of a black  maple. This branch sags down over the sidewalk.

Wordsmith Studio is now doing a weekly creative prompt. What's your pleasure-poetry, fiction, photography? Check out the prompt and create whatever you like in response to it. Post a link in the  comments section of the prompt post. Thanks to Kasie Whitener for this week's prompt.

Tuesday Photo-Childhood

This week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt is Childhood. I decided to show you a couple of things that I have in my home that also were in my childhood home.

The first is a photograph of my maternal grandmother. My mother kept it on the buffet in the dining room. I keep it on a table in the living room. I didn't really know my grandmother, but I look like her. So much so that it gave me a start the first time I saw this picture.

The second piece is a lamp my mother had in the living room. I have it in my living room, too. I'm just giving you a taste of what it looks like. It has a yellow glass base, and I would say it is from the mid-1950's. I repainted the bottom area once and replaced the cord and socket. I'm trying to keep it going as long as I can.

What reminds you of childhood? Take a picture of it and post a link in the comments section on the Wordsmith Studio blog post. Thanks to Rebecca Barray for this prompt.

Tuesday Photo-Silence

I decided to look to technology for this week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt-Silence.

I think in today's world, earphones that aren't plugged into anything are a great representation of silence. No iPod, no smartphone, no iPad, no iTunes-no sound!

Take a picture that shows your image of silence and post a link to it on the Wordsmith Studio blog post for this prompt. Thanks to Rebecca Barray for another great prompt.

Tuesday Photo-The Moon

This week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt is The Moon. This is a picture of the full moon a couple of nights ago.

Since I have become tuned into the moon for the purposes of poetry and photography, I have been surprised at how often it is visible. I see it on early morning walks, and I remember seeing it at noon once.

When I see it in the morning, I like to play a little and position it atop houses, trees or power lines.

Of course, I also have my classic horror movie opening shot.

Are you inspired by the moon? Thanks to Rebecca Barray for this prompt. Take your own picture of the moon and put a link to it at Wordsmith Studio.

Tuesday Photo-Drink Up!

Would you like to join me for a cup of coffee? I'm happy to sit and talk over this kind of brew.

As a matter of fact, I'm surprised I don't have coffee elbow. Hmm. Now that I think about it, maybe I do!

What's your favorite drink? Take a picture of it and post a link on the Wordsmith Studio's Weekly Photo Prompt. Thanks to Rebecca Barray for this prompt.

Tuesday Photo-Books

When I saw that this week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt was Books, I knew exactly which book I would photograph.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of  my oldest and most read books. You can see the wear along the edges of the binding and evidence that the book has been opened and closed many times. There is even a bit of unraveling going on. Only one small panel of the dust jacket remains and it is missing a corner. I have turned it into a bookmark.

To read more about my adventures with Sherlock, see a previous post-Elementary, My Dear Poet.

Thanks to Rebecca Barray for this week's photo prompt. Take a picture of one or some of your books and post a link to the photo in the comments on the prompt post.

Tuesday Photo-Forgotten

This week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt is Forgotten. Thanks to Rebecca Barray for another great prompt.

I decided to take a walk and see what kinds of things might have been forgotten at the edge of the sidewalks or the side of the road. I saw bottles, cans, cigarette packs and straws.

When I saw an apple core sitting on the sidewalk, I decided I had my subject.  Of all the items I had seen, I was most interested in the story behind this one.

How did this apple core with some edible fruit still on it end up on the sidewalk?  Did a child start to eat, decide he or she had had enough and toss it aside?  Did it slip out of a little hand accidentally and did tears appear as it hit the ground? Was it dropped or knocked out of the hand during the course of play?

What forgotten items are sitting around your house or neighborhood? Take a picture, post it and post the link in the comments on the prompt post.

Tuesday Photos-Flower

Flowers are still a little scarce because winter just doesn't want to let go this year! Today, the temperature probably won't get out of the 30's and we may even see some snow flakes!

When I saw that the Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt was flower, I knew I would have to do a little scrounging around. I headed into the back yard and used whatever I could find.

I even looked into the trees.

Thanks to Rebecca Barray for another great prompt. If you want to participate, take some photos and post a link to them in the comments on the post.

Tuesday Photos-Birds

Taking pictures of birds is a lot of fun so I was really excited when Rebecca Barray chose birds as this week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt.

The above photo is one of my favorite pictures of a robin. I took it earlier this year.

Of course, we have plenty of crows around.

In my neighborhood, I know there is always one place I can find a bird if I need one.

Take some pictures of your favorite birds, and post a link to them in the comments on the prompt post.

Tuesday Photo-Pet Peeves

Let me tell you about sweet gum tree seed pods. They are very difficult to rake because they are covered in spikes, like the head of a mace from medieval times. Consequently, they do not move  through the grass easily.

You may think you got them all, but the first time you mow the lawn you find out differently. You either catch one with a mower blade or step on one and twist your ankle.

Lastly, you can't compost them because they decompose so slowly.

Obviously, this one has been around awhile. That's the point. It's still around!

What's your pet peeve? Take a picture of it then post a link in the comments on the Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt blog post.

Tuesday Photo-One

This week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt is One.  However, not just any "one" will do.

The prompt requires finding something that usually appears in multiples and zeroing in on just one. This photo is of a leaf on one of my shrubs.

Thanks to Rebecca Barray for this prompt. Go to the prompt post and see her amazing photo of an individual snowflake.

Tuesday Photo-Spring

Nothing says spring like a robin-even when there is snow on the ground! Welcome to spring 2013. This picture was taken Saturday afternoon, shortly after the snow began.

This is approximately the same spot Sunday morning. Not a robin in sight!

I'm reprising a poem I posted a couple of years ago called Snow in Spring.

I hope your spring has a little more spring in it than mine does. Either way, take a picture of it and post a link in the comments on this week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt.  Thanks to Linda G Hatton for this week's prompt.

Tuesday Photo-Yuck

This week's Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt is Yuck! Thanks to Rebecca Barray for this prompt.

To me, dirty snow is always good for a yuck. I found some leftover from our late winter snowstorms.  It seems the snow at shaded street corners gets the most yucky.

What makes you say yuck?  Take a photo and post a link to it in the comments on the prompt post.

Tuesday Photo-Early

When I saw the Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt-Early, provided by Rebecca Barray; I knew what I had to do. I  got up early to see if I could catch a little color in the sky.

I was successful the first morning I went out. I took a few shots, including the one above, and headed home.

Fortunately for me, I had crossed the street while taking the first set of pictures. When I looked back to the east when I crossed again, I saw

a big, beautiful fireball on the rise.

It's not too late to take your own photo that represents early and post a link to it in the comments on the prompt post.

Tuesday Photo-Broken

What do you think of when you think about breaking an egg?

Scrambled, Sunny-side up, Over easy?

Pancakes, Waffles, French Toast?

Cakes, Cookies, Pastries?

Or just Sunday Brunch!

What else can we break and then enjoy so much?

Take a picture of something broken and put a link to it
in the comments on the prompt page.

Tuesday Photo-Move It

This is both how and what I have been moving recently. We had a pretty significant "snow event" last Thursday.

I grew up in Buffalo, New York. Sometimes snowstorms in Kansas City wouldn't be considered snowstorms in Buffalo. This one, I think, would be a snowstorm anywhere.

So, I spent a few hours moving with the shovel. I also had to dig around in the closet to find the boots. (See prints in foreground.)

We are getting another round of snow. I am going to be moving this way once again!

Thanks to Veronica Roth for this Wordsmith Studio Photo Prompt.
