Looks at a particular space.
Stands still.
Makes a slow turn of the head.
Stands still.
Stretches its neck.
Stands still.
Bends down then straightens up.

There's something new

I take in its
coloring and markings.
Its build and
the way it moves.
I watch it search for food.
Its stillness and focus.
Then, the quickness of its strike.
I hesitate to leave
though I have learned
much firsthand.
When there's something new

Earth Day Present
Earth Day Present
What better way
to spend Earth Day
than taking pictures
in a park?
The ducks and geese
were up to
their usual antics
when I saw
a blue heron
flying over the lake.
It landed on
a stone ledge
and gazed at
the water, then
paced on the grass.
Suddenly, it took off
and flew in
the direction from
which it came.
I was told that
herons frequented
the park, but this
was the first one
I had seen.
