The Lakeness Monster
The Lakeness Monster
I circled the lake as I often do.
Hadn't seen anything new.
As I came around a bend,
I saw the Lakeness Monster
overhanging the lake's end.
It had fallen from its family tree.
Remained as close to shore
as it could be.
I walked right by, unafraid.
I'll tell you why.
When the Lakeness snaps,
it loses part of itself.
It doesn't hurt anything else.

Halloween is upon us.
I must be honest.
Creatures will be about
that make me scream and shout.
Monsters, vampires, zombies, ghosts.
I'm not sure which scare me the most.
Still, I can enjoy this day.
I know these scary creatures will go away.

I see faces in

Up in the clouds,
down in the water,
in between on the trees.
The more I look,
the more I see.

what's facing me.

I find stories in the shadows.
Am fascinated by the
thoughts the shapes elicit.
I see a tall figure
holding out two hoops.
Is this the beginning
of another show?
Will the hoops soon
be tossed about or
start spinning?
Or, is this performer
set to hand the hoops
off to the next in line
then take a place
in the audience?

I don't look for signs
of rain or snow.
I see the hills and valleys,
a pair of eyes looking
out above a mask,
and a large animal,
perhaps a wildcat.
I take a moment
to let my imagination
float by.
