After hanging out together
most of the year,
the cones went out
on their own.
Plop, plop--they dropped.
Hit the ground, rolled around.
Pushed by the wind.
Kicked by a foot.
Some crushed by the same.
But, one small group
was gathered up.
Placed side-by-side.
Reunited after the fall.

The Best Reasons
The Best Reasons
When I think
about my past,
I shake my head
at how long it is.
More than time is gone.
When I think
about my future,
I realize how short
it will be, comparatively.
Much of what will
fill it is yet to exist.
Perhaps these are
the best reasons to
focus on the present.

Unexpected Falls
Unexpected Falls
I am as comfortable
with the leaves on
the ground as I am
with them on the trees.
There are times I am
surprised to see what
else sits among them.
The results of
unexpected falls.

The Average Day
The Average Day
Day breaks.
Colors splinter
the sky, catch
the eyes of those
who rise early.
Night falls.
The sun drops.
Darkness descends,
brings day to
an end.
What breaks and
falls do we face
in between?
How is your day? Have you found something to write about?

Uneven Ground
Uneven Ground
The knee aches
on uneven ground,
issuing warnings.
“Watch those stones.
You might lose
your balance.”
Don’t make that climb.
It’s too risky.”
Recently damaged
by a misstep,
the knee cries out
in hopes of
preventing another.
Trust, once broken,
is hard to restore.
