Detached

 Detached

Up, down, up. down

The feather stands and

falls with the

strength of the wind.

As part of a wing,

the feather helped

a body soar.

Detached and alone,

it soars no more.

By Design

By Design

The goose rises and
spreads its wings.
The feathers grow
in many rows
and different lengths.
They make a pattern
by design.
The sight of it
gives me a lift.

Grounded

Grounded

Fallen feather
tangled in grass.
Wind gust
gives it a lift.
Not enough
to let it fly.

Even in Winter

Even in Winter

Even in winter,
I see a feather
on the ground.
The grass is brown.
The dirt is muddy.
The one left behind
rests comfortably
in its new space.
If it is hurt, the
wound doesn't show.

Unexpected Falls

Unexpected Falls

I am as comfortable
with the leaves on
the ground as I am
with them on the trees.

There are times I am
surprised to see what
else sits among them.
The results of
unexpected falls.

Slipped Away

Slipped Away

The feather
simply lets go.
Whatever held
it to the body
doesn't anymore.

There was no attack.
This happened as
a matter of course.
Does the body know
what has slipped away?

Detached

Detached

The single feather
of a blue jay
lies in the grass.
It appears whole
as though it was
let go by the bird
not torn from it.
Did the jay note
its absence?
Miss it the first
time he flew
without it?
Accept the loss
as part of the
natural order
and send it off
with the dip
of a wing?

Have you found a bird's feather in your yard? Did you wonder how the bird lost it?
