The Seeds We Sow

The Seeds We Sow

The seeds we sow
grow within our gardens.
We tend to the plants.
Cut them back, limit
the space they occupy.
When they reproduce,
the seeds scatter,
blown by the wind.
We don't know
where they will land.
Still, they grow,
no longer within our control.

Who is Watching?

Who is Watching?

Who is watching
what you do?

Who is listening
to what you say?

Who is following
your example?

Who will they
become?

Glorious Words

Glorious Words

They are all made of letters,
but each one is different.
They vary in size and sound.
Come from many cultures.
We use them routinely,
sometimes without thinking
about the power they have.

This is another poem from the PAD Chapbook Challenge. The prompt was glorious.

Unspoken

Unspoken

The words that remain unspoken
are powerful, not just token.
They play in the mind.
You can feel them grind,
left behind,
unbroken.

This poem is written in a Welsh form called a Clogyrnach.

When the Words Go on Strike

When the Words Go on Strike

I negotiate.
Try to point out
the importance of pace,
that rhyme has its place,
the factors considered
as to where the lines break.

I reaffirm that
all words are equal
in value and
a spot in the title
is not top billing.

I sympathize that
some will be taken out
through the revision process,
but stand firm against
issuing any no-cut contracts.

What do you do when the words go on strike?

Frozen Out

 Frozen Out

The words floated
in my head.
I called them
each by name, but
they didn't respond.
I waited for them to
come out and play
but they wouldn't.
I left them, unwritten
for now, to talk
among themselves.

What do you do when the words freeze you out?

To the Author

To the Author

I am submerged
in the words.
Surrounded
by your choice
of nouns, towns,
sights and sounds.
The characters
you created; the
stories you related.

No more will come.
You have left
 all you could.
Every time
I read them,
I am immersed
in your love of words.

I wrote this poem as part of Robert Lee Brewer's 2015 November PAD Chapbook Challenge. The prompt was submerged.

Fishing for Words

Fishing for Words

After sunrise, I rise.
Coffee ready,
I sit and sip
as a steady stream
of words runs
through my mind.
I wish I could hook
them one at a time.
Create the perfect line,
the perfect line,
the perfect line
until I finish.
Instead, I scratch
down what I can
then revise and revise.
I tire and go to sleep,
only to rise and start again.

Float the Words

Float the Words

I write because I must.
I have to trust that
what I say will find
its way to those who
need it. I won’t
force feed it to
anyone, just
float the words
and see where
they dock.

Why do you write? Do you know of an instance when your words found someone who needed them?

Waiting for Words

Waiting for Words

Waiting for words
isn’t like waiting
for a bus.
No designated
places scattered
throughout  the city
where words arrive
on the half hour.

Waiting for words
isn’t like waiting
on tables.
No call
from the kitchen
that the next plate
of words is up.

Waiting for words
isn’t like waiting
in line.
No one giving
out words when you
get to the front.

Waiting for words
is waiting for
 your voice.
Letting it speak
 even when you
 are afraid of
what it will say.

Thursday, November 25, 2010

On this Thanksgiving Day, I have many things for which to be grateful. What stands out for me this year is all that has come along through the writing of poetry. I have made new friends and connected with old ones in a different way. I have gone new places within the city in which I live. I have connected with other arts in new and exciting ways. So, the poem that follows is a short (as usual) tribute to the building blocks of poetry.

Word Work

Words you read
Words you write
Words that give insight
Words you sing
Words you share
Words that convey care
Words you hear
Words you need
Words that plant a seed
Words you taste
Words you smell
Words that work so well.
