Coffee Grounds Blues

Coffee Grounds Blues

I got grounds in the coffee.
Careful when you pour the last cup.
If you don't pay attention,
that cup will be full of muck.

I was pouring the water,
steady and straight.
Looked away for a second.
That was my mistake.

I got grounds in the coffee.
Careful when you pour the last cup.
If you don't pay attention,
that cup will be full of muck.

The grounds started flowing
over the top.
Oozing into the coffee
before I could stop.

I got grounds in the coffee.
Careful when you pour the last cup.
If you don't pay attention,
that cup will be full of muck.

Sometimes it happens.
No way to back up.
Just turn your thoughts to
who should get that last cup.

I got grounds in the coffee.
Careful when you pour the last cup.
If you don't pay attention,
that cup will be full of muck.

The Beauty of the Day

The Beauty of the Day

Step out and see
the beauty of the day.
Look up to the sky.
Watch the clouds float by,
the sun on the rise,
the moon departing.

Trees line the street.
Leaves wave in the wind.
Birds sing out or
search for something to eat.

Other animals scurry on the ground,
aware of every sound.
If we are that attentive,
we'll see wonders all around.

Float the Words

Float the Words

I write because I must.
I have to trust that
what I say will find
its way to those who
need it. I won’t
force feed it to
anyone, just
float the words
and see where
they dock.

Why do you write? Do you know of an instance when your words found someone who needed them?

Natural Beauty

Natural Beauty

Light the night
with a moon so bright
that eyes rise
to take in the sight.

Watch the glow.
A natural show
seen for free
since time long ago.

The sun rests
but still gives its best.
Reflected
Present in recess

Who else took pictures of the moon last weekend?

Spills

Spills

A cup tips.
Liquid slides
on the table
in all directions
and begins to drop
to the floor.

Napkins are saturated
and notebooks are
painted with sepia streaks.

Hands work quickly to
sop up the beverage,
erase the evidence
of the miscue.

The cup is refilled.
The stains are permanent
even though
they haven't dried.

Dusk in the Sculpture Park

There are three sources of light in this photograph. The moon and the streetlight are the obvious ones. The Bloch building is illuminated after dark. This photograph was taken at dusk so only the moon is shining.

Take Your Mark

Take Your Mark

Start another race
Set your own pace
Find your own space
Don’t focus on place
No matter what you face
finish with grace

One Day Only

One Day Only

The bloom lasts
for one day.
Will it have
time in the sun
or weather
a storm?
Will it feel
 temperatures
that are balmy
 or blistering?
Will it hold bees
and butterflies or
face dogs and deer?
Will it catch
the eye of passersby
or spend hours
in anonymity?
No matter
what awaits,
the bloom opens
and lasts for one day.

How often do you look at the flowers in your garden?
