The Walk

The Walk

Each step matters.
Go ahead, take one
then another.
Not too close
to the edge.
Try to stay
on solid ground.
Don't be afraid
to look around.
You can still
go forward
if you slip
into the sand.
It just takes
more effort.
Rest when you're
weary, set
your own pace.
You may even
need to retrace
a few strides.
Keep going.
You're making progress.

Sit With the Shadows

Sit With the Shadows

You break away
but aren't broken
by your fall.
Kick up dust
when you land
then settle in.
Find contentment
in a place where
you can glisten
in the sun or
sit with the shadows.

This poem got its start during a writing sprint. As part of Wordsmith Studio's 4th anniversary celebration in April, Elissa Field is hosting writing sprints on Twitter each Friday from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Eastern time. You can join in using #wssprint or #wschat. We did a few warm-up sprints last Friday. You can check the feed at the above hashtags.

When the Words Go on Strike

When the Words Go on Strike

I negotiate.
Try to point out
the importance of pace,
that rhyme has its place,
the factors considered
as to where the lines break.

I reaffirm that
all words are equal
in value and
a spot in the title
is not top billing.

I sympathize that
some will be taken out
through the revision process,
but stand firm against
issuing any no-cut contracts.

What do you do when the words go on strike?

Reflections of Early Spring

Reflections of Early Spring

The trees look down
into the water.
They see themselves
as they would be
painted by an artist
with an unsteady hand.
Their branches are bare
and spots of ice
float among them.
They long for
the days ahead
when their leaves
will be green
and plentiful.

What do you look forward to as spring progresses?

In a Fog

In a Fog

Like a cloud
with acrophobia,
the fog sits close
to the ground.
Our eyes search
for the everyday
sights we take
for granted--
a stop sign,
a street light,
the road ahead.
We will not
see them again
until the fog
conquers its fear
and begins to lift.

How do someone else's fears impact us?

Opportunity

Opportunity

may be no bigger
than a crevice.
A small opening
in the rock wall
that you face.
A foot hold
that leads to
your first step.
A place to
begin the climb.

Do you remember someone who gave you an opportunity?

Ferris Wheel

Ferris Wheel

The Ferris wheel
takes us up
and around.
At peak height,
we see the
entire park
below us.
All the choices
we can make
with the right
number of tickets.
The amusements
appear small,
less threatening.
As we come
back down,
the structures
grow larger,
more intimidating.
We limit are options
as soon as our feet
touch the ground.

Are you an amusement park fan?

Time

Time

Time goes
by seconds
by minutes
by hours
by days
by weeks
by months
by years.
Time goes by
and we can't
buy it back.

Thanks for spending some of your time reading this.

Sparkling Water

Sparkling Water

Nothing is hidden.
Every rock is exposed.
See all the way
to the bottom.
No secrets.
Everything is
crystal clear.

Do you like to spend time on, in or near the water?

On Parade

On Parade

The clouds mimic the birds.
A flock of bright white
puffs in a ragged V formation.
They don't swerve or dive
but float in unison on
a blue parade ground.
The sight of them brings
 us to attention.

What do you see in the clouds?
